dvd combo drives are dirt cheap nowadays, but i haven't had the need for one in my desktop lately.

i would still recommend you get one. the only reason i don't have one for my desktop is because i can create cd images using my laptop.

if you do need to go the non-optical route, it might be a hassle if you've got old hardware. some of them won't recognize a thumb drive as your os installer. but this route is very fun and exciting! imagine your whole pc in an SD card.

all my optical drives aren't working - floppy, cd-rom, and cd-writer :( i think it's been this way for three years now...

anyway, this has been a reason (er, an excuse) why i haven't reformatted for so long... would you recommend i buy a cheap cd drive (since i won't use it that much anyway), a dvd drive (so i can at least watch dvd's and install dvd games, and maybe even use it when i upgrade everything else in the system, or just find a solution using another medium/drive?
