> web 2.0

well, with all the improvements in technologies that are allowing people to do more over the web, it's bound to create profit somewhere down the road. i'd watch the development of gaming consoles closely if i'd want to profit. the banking and merchandising sector of the web is getting quite saturated and non-friendly to new entrants. (lolz, five forces, anyone?)

I think people are profitting from this Web 2.0 thing :-P

Oh, and FOSS doesn't stop you from selling the software. The best thing about it is that it fosters a culture of collaboration (hopefully) and the turning of software into infrastructure technology (I'm trying to remember the Does IT Matter paper in vain).

Spot on the Captain Hook software part. The cashcows are the big businesses that have contracts and whatnot. It's actually a great plan, which they pretty much balance between this familiarity with profit etc etc.
